Know Your Rights

Gather ’round kids, it’s time to Know Your Rights! Check out our handy little model below to understand how your rights are swirling all around you, like sunshine and dust mites!

The Founding Documents are things like the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The Bush Administration is the group of men and women in the White House who lead our country along with this guy. He’s our President! Twice!

Not too long ago, it used to be the case that in order to lose your rights*, someone pretty much had to prove you weren’t human, because rights were bigger than humans. Sounds pretty tough to do, right? Well, now all they need to do is claim that you’re not an American, because rights are for some Americans to give to lots of non-Americans. And once they accuse you of not being an American, you don’t even have the right to disprove it! That sounds a lot easier to do, doesn’t it?

Why did this change? Well, some people argue that you only have inalienable rights if you’re a U.S. citizen, and that’s how we protect freedom. Those people are called “apologists” and also “hypocrites”. They believe that humans can behave immorally towards other humans, depending on where they live! They don’t believe in “self-evident” truths about human equality, they believe in something called “hegemony”. It’s a big word that means being on top is awesome!

So everybody assume the position and get ready to receive some government!

*Including The Writ of Habeas Corpus, which provides protection against indefinite incarceration without charges. Yay, jail!
